Elections and By-Elections in OXWABOxfordshire County CouncilOxfordshire County Council is re-elected every 4 years with by-elections being called when councillors leave their post. The last election was May 2005. Owing to recent boundary changes, there were 74 councillors elected representing 57 divisions. 17 Liberal Democrats were elected (8 of them from OXWAB). (One seat was lost in a subsequent by-election so there are now 16 Liberal Democrats on the County Council.) The Liberal Democrats form the opposition. District Councils in OXWABThe District Councils in Oxfordshire have different re-election schedules. Oxford City re-elects half of its councillors every 2 years. Each City Ward has two councillors, each councillor serves a 4 year term. The next election is May 2008. Cherwell District re-elects every one third of the councillors every year for three years and then has a year long break when the county elections take place. The next elections will take place in 2008. City & Cherwell elections 2008. Vale of White Horse District re-elects once every 4 years. The last time was in May 2007. By-elections are called when a sitting councillor leaves. WestminsterMembers of Parliament (MP) are elected during a General Election or if a By-Election is called. The last General Election was in June 2001. Prime Minister Tony Blair went to Buckingham Palace on Tuesday 5th April and the Queen gave permission to dissolve parliament. The next General Election will take place on Thursday 5th May. This is the same day as the County Council Elections. Polling stations will be open from 7 am until 10 pm. EuropeMembers of the European Parliament (MEP) are elected every 5 years. The last MEP Election was in June 2004. When a MEP stands down, they are replaced by one of the MEP's unsuccessful party candidates. This is achieved by utilising a list system of candidates.(eg 5 people on list, 2 elected, one stands down, 3rd on list replaces them.) By-ElectionsThe last by-election was on 6th April 2006 for the Kennington and South Hinksey ward of Vale of White Horse District Council, following the tragically early death of Liberal Democrat Councillor Sylvia Patterson. Liberal Democrat Bernard Auton won it with a majority of 194 over the Conservatives. The next by-election is a County Council by-election on 1st May 2008 in Kidlington & Yarnton.
