Campaigning for OXWAB with Dr Evan Harris MP

NHS SOS

The Liberal Democrats launched a major campaign on Health recently. The 'SOS for the NHS' campaign was launched by Shadow Health Secretary Norman Lamb on Saturday 23rd June at the party's first local government conference. Locally, Abingdon Hospital is under threat of closure and Lib Dems have been campaigning to try to prevent this.

Green Tax Switch

In a major announcement on 12th July 2007, radical plans to cut the income tax were unveiled. The move to cut the basic rate by four pence in the pound will reduce the basic rate of income tax to 16p, benefiting millions of people on low and middle incomes. We will then switch to green taxes on things like pollution and carbon. A typical double-earning family will receive about £1,000 a year back.

Liberal Democrats are committed to making the tax system:

  • Fairer - progressive in relation to income and wealth- with tax cuts for those on lower incomes paid for by removing loopholes exploited by the rich.

  • Greener - taxing environmental pollution and resource depletion and giving bigger incentives to sustainability - giving incentives for responsible use of resources.

  • Simpler and easier to understand - for individuals and companies: fewer rates and reliefs, more transparent- especially for pensioners and small businesses.

  • More decentralised - greater freedom for democratic local government to raise (and spend) revenue - so that there is a clearer link between local services and local accountability.
