Thu 11th Sep 2008: Lib Dems Rejoice at Signing of EU Charter on Equalities. Oxfordshire County Council became the first County Council in the UK to sign the EU Charter for Equality between men and women in local life after Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Zoé Patrick urged this with a motion in June. Liberal Democrats in Opposition at the County Council were aware of the importance of being seen to sign up to this important Charter as much work was going on behind the scenes. Tories Refuse Support for Youth Service. At Tuesday's full Council meeting, Liberal Democrat councillors were shocked by Conservative councillors refusing to fund more youth workers across the county. Wed 10th Sep 2008: Conservatives Refuse to Face Criticism . The Tories were so afraid of a Lib Dem motion on education for 14-19 year olds that when it came to Council in June they talked so much that the meeting ran out of time before the motion was taken. "There was a deliberate attempt to extend earlier business quite unnecessarily," said Jean Fooks, Liberal Democrat Shadow Cabinet member for Children & Young People, who tabled the motion. "A named vote was requested on a totally non-controversial motion, thus wasting a lot of time, and so my potentially embarrassing motion was postponed." Hole in West St Helen's Street, Abingdon. A hole that suddenly developed in West St Helen's Street, Abingdon on Saturday evening led to the immediate closure of the road for safety reasons after local councillor, Lesley Legge, rang Oxfordshire Highways after being contacted by a resident. "When I visited at about 9pm," said Lesley, "I was surprised to see such an enormous hole. I am very grateful to the highway authorities in acting so quickly to cordon it off." Tories Reject Community Proposals. Liberal Democrat finance spokesperson, Cllr Alan Armitage, has attacked the Tories for being mean and unimaginative with their money, preferring to put it in the County's already full coffers rather than spend it on worthwhile community projects. Mon 1st Sep 2008: Keep Up the Good Work, say Lib Dems. Cllr Jean Fooks, shadow cabinet member for Children & Young People, welcomed the excellent news that young people in Oxfordshire are committing fewer crimes than in previous years and compared to other places around the country. She called for this work - which is at threat of funding cuts - to continue and for the Tory County Cabinet to commit to continued funding. Leading Liberal Democrats from Oxfordshire, Reading and neighbouring councils have met to agree a common approach to dealing with the recent Briscoe Report, which recommends transport solutions for Reading. Thu 17th Jul 2008: 20mph limits: The Devil Might be in the Detail. Liberal Democrats have said they are pleased with the report to Cabinet on 20mph speed limits being introduced in Oxford City. This follows their motion calling for 20mph limits in Oxford at Council on 17th June. Fri 20th Jun 2008: What Message Are We Sending to Young People? ask Lib Dems. Liberal Democrat Janet Godden was disappointed that her motion raising concerns about the use of the electronic "mosquito" device to disperse groups of teenagers from public places was thrown out by the Tories at yesterday's Council meeting. Wed 18th Jun 2008: Recognition of the importance of equality. County Councillor Zoé Patrick, Liberal Democrat Leader, was delighted that her motion, calling for the Oxfordshire County Council to sign the EU Charter of Equality for women and men in local life, was agreed by Council yesterday at its meeting of full Council. "20 is plenty" agreed by Council. Liberal Democrat Alan Armitage was delighted that his motion to agree, in principle, to 20mph speed limits in Oxford City and in other areas that need them was agreed without dissent at the Council meeting yesterday. Eco-town proposals "in wrong place", say Lib Dems. The Goverment's proposal for an Ecotown at Weston Otmoor was condemned by Liberal Democrat Councillor Dermot Roaf in a debate at County Hall on Tuesday 17 June. Mon 9th Jun 2008: Local Dismay at Bus Route Change. Local Liberal Democrat County Councillor Roz Smith has spoken of her residents' dismay at changes to the No. 10 bus route, which now no longer serves residents in the Florence Park area. And there was concern that the new route now means buses doing a u-turn on the busy Between Towns Road (B4495) outside the Temple Square shopping centre and right next to one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in Oxford. Woodstock Road Cycle Track Victory. County Councillor Dermot Roaf (on behalf of local cyclists) has been pressing the County for over a year to extend the cycle track on the wide pavement on the west side of Woodstock Road south of Bainton Road. There is a gap between the end of the bus-lane and the start of the cycle track at Bainton Road and the traffic island near Moreton Road makes the road very narrow and frightening for cyclists.
