Vale Councillors Welcome Dispersal Order Extension4.26.38pm GMT Thu 16th Nov 2006 Councillors have welcomed the confirmation that the successful Dispersal Order which has been operating in South Abingdon since June will be extended to 22 May 2007. The dispersal order will continue to be in force between 5pm and 6am and the area covered has been extended to include the Tythe Farm and Poets Estates, the basket ball court and surround on Lambrick Way and Southern Town Park and skate park area. A map of the designated area will be displayed around the area. [Full details are provided below]. The dispersal order has been extended in response to calls received by the police concerning groups of young people continuing to gather in the area. Some of the young people have been involved in anti-social behaviour. Surveys of local residents and businesses have indicated that this continues to be an issue for many people. Councillor Mary de Vere said: "This is one of a number of measures aimed at making everyone feel safer in Abingdon. The Vale has a very low crime rate but statistics aren't enough. People need to feel safe as well as to be safe and this order is part of a package of measures intended to reassure people. "We have a very good record in this area through such measures as CCTV and alleygating on some estates. We also work hard to engage with young people to avoid them being demonised unnecessarily, including provision of leisure facilities and support for vulnerable young people. All these measures together benefit the whole community and I hope they help residents to see Abingdon as the safe, secure town it is."
